AAA Builders License Education  
Pre-Builders License and Continuing Education
Residential Construction Education

Beginning June 1, 2008, applicants for initial licensure either as a residential builder or as a residential maintenance and alteration contractor shall successfully complete a pre-licensure course of study consisting of 60 hours of approved pre-licensure courses consisting of at least 6 hours of courses in each of the following areas of competency:

  • Business management, estimating and job costing
  • Design and building science
  • Contracts, liability, and risk management
  • Marketing and sales.
  • Project management and scheduling
  • The current Michigan residential code
  • Construction safety standards promulgated under the Michigan occupational safety and health act, 1974 PA 154, MCL 408.1001 to 408.1094.
 

Beginning January 1, 2009, a person obtaining initial licensure as a residential builder or a residential maintenance and alteration contractor shall successfully complete not less than 3 hours of activities demonstrating continuing competency per calendar year, during the first 6 calendar years of licensure, and 21 hours per 3-year time period since the issuance of his or her license.  At least 3 hours shall be devoted to those activities designed to develop a licensee?s understanding and ability to apply state building codes and laws relating to the licensed occupation, safety, and changes in construction and business management laws.  A licensee who has held a license for more than 6 years or who has not been determined by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth (DLEG) in a final order to have violated this act or a rule adopted under this act shall successfully complete at least 3 hours of activities demonstrating continuing competency per license cycle to include 1 hour of codes, 1 hour of safety and 1 hour of legal issues.

 

In the case of a licensee who has been determined by DLEG in a final order to have violated PA 157 of 2007 or a rule adopted under this act, he or she shall successfully complete, during the next complete license cycle, up to 21 hours of activities that demonstrate the development of continuing competency during that next license cycle as determined appropriate by order of the department, at least 3 hours of that continuing competency to include 1 hour of codes, 1 hour of safety, and 1 hour of legal issues.

This program is designed to provide the student with the necessary courses to satisfy the requirements of PA 157 of 2007 in order that he/she may obtain a Michigan residential builders license or a residential maintenance and alteration contractor?s license.  It is also designed to provide an avenue to satisfy the requirements for renewing that license each license cycle.

 

In addition to the course work, applicants will be required to take and pass a license examination, which is separate from this program and may be taken at any time.  It is the student?s responsibility to make arrangements for this test.

 

Equipment Furnished:  The student must furnish pens, pencils, calculators and a notebook.  The school provides all other equipment needed. 

 

Placement Assistance:  The school does not provide placement assistance.

Courses
Our courses are offered at locations throughout Michigan. Each course may be offered at several different locations on different dates.  Each student?s program will be designed together with the administration taking into consideration the amount of travel the student is willing to do and the time frame desired to complete the 60 hours required for licensing.
 
Residential Construction  Prelicensing Program for Builders and Maintenance and Alteration Contractors  

 
This comprehensive 60-hour program has been designed in modules to allow it to be presented in a number of different formats to accommodate the working schedules of class participants.  It fulfills all of the requirements under Public Act 157 of 2007 for licensing. It includes the following components:

Business Management, Estimating & Job Costing (8 hours): A comprehensive study of business practices, project estimating and job costing.

Green Building Design & Building Science (8 hours): A study of the principles of Green Building.

Contracts, Liability & Risk Management (8 hours): Covers the legal aspects of contract preparation, liability insurances, and the management of company risk.

Marketing & Sales (8 hours): Discusses Marketing and Sales principles and builds on a significant base of required knowledge and skills marketing and sales st
rategies for residential building.

Project Management & Scheduling (8 hours): Discusses a significant base of required knowledge and skills in construction management for residential building. It includes both on-site and off-site project management, scheduling techniques and scheduling administration.

Michigan Residential Building Code (8 hours): Includes all the code requirements for building homes in Michigan.

Michigan Construction MIOSHA Safety Standards (7 hours): Covers MIOSHA regulations for construction safety.

Occupational Codes and Licensing (8 hours): Discusses all applicable Occupational Codes and Licensing information for the State of Michigan.

The participant is required to attend and complete satisfactorily each component of this course to fulfill the requirements mandated by the State of Michigan.

Look for this course to be offered throughout Michigan on weekends, evenings, and during the week.  Let us know your schedule and we will offer the class in the format easiest for you at a location near you as long as we have a minimum of 15 course participants.
